KDE Ellmann

The workshops of the artisanal wood turnery Ellmann, also called “KD Ellmann” or “KDE”, are located in the idyllic town Olbernhau since 1934. Olbernhau is situated only 12 km from Seiffen in the idyllic area between Vogtland and Saxon Switzerland. Several rivers and streams run through the city. Therefore, Olbernhau is also called the city of the seven valleys. The seven white dots on the fine, curved green wings of the well-known Ellmann angels symbolize these seven valleys of their hometown.

The company founded by Herbert Ellmann dates back to 1928. In 1937, William Klemm and Herbert Ellmann founded the company Klemm & Ellmann and introduced the lacquer painting on the base of methylated spirit in the Olbernhau area. The success of the company is based on the combination of these bright colors with traditional woodcarving at the highest level. The lacquer painting of the company has been preserved until today and is one of the quality features of Ellmann products.

When Wolfgang Ellmann took over the company in 1979, the name changed into “Kunstgewerbliche Drechslerei Ellmann” (artisanal wood turnery Ellmann), in short KDE, and also received a new, modern logo with a curved E in the candlestick. Wolfgang Ellmann's son Jens, who also owns the master craftsman's diploma, took over the management of the continuously growing company in 2003. Today, the product range consists of around 900 articles and each year new attractive motifs are coming up.

The wonderful Ellmann angels with their green wings were first made in 1934, and have since then become one of the best-known Ellmann products. The finely curved green wings, which are decorated with 7 white dots (the seven valleys of Olbernhau), make them unmistakable. They are available in two different sizes (6,5 and 22cm), some with little crowns on their head. Ellmann angels play all sorts of instruments. Of course, suitable accessories like little fir trees and cloud platforms of various shapes and sizes must not be missing. In addition to the angel musicians, there are more cute motifs such as star-bearers, horse riding angels, angel-tree-ornaments, baking angels etc. Collectors all over the world know that it is impossible to escape the charm of these little figurines.

In addition to the famous angels with green wings, the workshops of KD Ellmann of course also produce other Erzgebirge products, some in natural wood, but most of them in the typical, cheerful lacquer colors. Easter miniatures, flower carriages, rabbit musicians, smokers, pyramids and much more.

All figures are made from native woods such as beech and lime and painted with great attention to detail and great craftsmanship - of course each of them by hand. Just take a look at our assortment, you will surely find what cheers up your heart.
