Nutcracker description by Mr. Steinbach:
When you come as a visitor to the USA and tour Gettysburg around the 1st of July, you will see, in addition to all the numerous monu¬ments which commemorate the war of secession, large groups of soldiers in old uniforms with old weapons and artillery reenacting the battle of Gettysburg of 1863 on the battlefield there. The war then seems so different from the way we know it, though there's a powerful lot of explosions and canon fire crackling all over the place. On this battleground during the American Civil War, there stood on the one side the troops of General Lee with 50,000 men, and on the other side, the commander in chief of the Union Army, General Grant with approximately 90,000 men. Lee hailed from a family of officers and was a brilliant military strategist, who was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on account of his bravery and was made superintendent of the Military Academy at West Point in 1852. Although he was strongly against breaking up the Union over the disputed question of slavery, he felt he could not fight against his own state of Virginia, even though he favored gradual freedom for the slaves, freeing many of his own. At the end of the war, he was forced to surrender to his adversary General Grant, who took the occasion to deny him the rights of citizenship for the remainder of his life. They were only restored to him posthumously in 1975.
