Nutcracker description by Mr. Steinbach:
RICHARD WAGNER ( 1813-1883)
Richard Wagner would definitely have to be included in the ranks of great German composers. He was born in Leipzig and soon thereafter, moved with his stepfather and family to Dresden. He led a very unsettled artist's existence and also lived for a time in Würzburg, Magdeburg, Riga and Paris, which, from a financial perspective, was actually beyond his means. During this time he composed ""Rienzi"", ""The Flying Dutchman"", ""Tannhäuser"" and ""Lohengrin"". Because of the German Revolution of 1848, which was an attempt to bring about the downfall of the German monarchy, Wagner fled to Switzerland, but soon returned to compose the famous ""Ring of the Nibelungen"", ""The Rheingold"" and the ""Valkyries"" and then later in Paris, the ""Mastersingers of Nuremberg"". As has been borne out by history, Ludwig II of Bavaria was a great patron of the arts. As a sign of his friendship with Wagner, he assumed his numerous debts and provided him with a lifetime pension. As a result, ""Tristan and Isolde"" was first performed at the Palace Theater in Munich. Whenever we drive to Nuremberg to visit the Toy Fair there, we can always see from the Autobahn highway the Festival Theater, which the Bavarian King Ludwig II had constructed there out of sympathy for Richard Wagner: very beautiful on the inside, but quite simple on the outside. This is where Richard Wagner completed, among others, such operas as ""The Twilight of the Gods"" and ""Parsifal"", which, because of their great appeal to King Ludwig, had to be performed 16 times in succession for him. Today's visitors to the famous Wagner Festival in Bayreuth can find the grave of Richard Wagner in the garden of the Villa ""Wahnfried"".
