Things are getting serious in the Ore Mountains Christmas county. The different cities and villages are preparing for their countless Christmas markets and events. In Annaberg-Buchholz, for example, the setting up of the 22metre tall fir tree has already taken place on November 11th. Until the market begins on November 27th, it will be decorated with 600 lights.

The official beginning of Christmas season is usually the first advent week end, which is November 27th/28th this year. On these days, many Christmas markets are opened up with the so-called event of ‚push-starting the pyramid’ (Pyramidenanschieben) where the large outside pyramids are brought into motion. That is often embedded in a little performance where the figures of the pyramid ‚come alive’ and tell the audience about their story.

An important part of Christmas time in the Ore Mountains as well are the mountain parades. These parades emhpasize the mining heritage. The particapiants wear traditional mining uniforms and the old tools, just like their ancestors did centuries ago. Like that, the ancient mining customs are kept alive up until today. Many tourists and onlookers also enjoy this kind of history prerservation.

The conclusion of the pre-Christmas season is usually the so called ‚Mettenschicht’. An old mining custom as well, it used to be the miner’s last shift before Christmas which the miners concluded with a feast, joined by their families. Nowadays, people of the mining villages still gather for a night of traditional food and regional songs and poems. In the old mines.

These were only three special events that take place during a typical Ore Mountain Christmas time. Pretty much every day in the four advent weeks is filled with special Christmas events and make a visit to the area a must.
