Nutcracker from Legler

Legler's traditional HoDreWa company is located in Olbernhau in the Ore Mountains, also known as the "town of the seven valleys". A panoramic path with many views leads along the Sachsenweg from Olbernhau directly to the toy village of Seiffen, which should be familiar to every wood art lover. But there is another connection between the two places from the Erzgebirge - the historical past of mining, toy making and other Erzgebirge arts and crafts.

The Erzgebirge nutcrackers in the sizes below 50cm are less suitable for breaking open shells, but are much more decorative objects at Christmas time. They can be divided into three groups in terms of size: The large nutcrackers between 20 and 50cm, the 10-16cm high miniature nutcrackers and the Olbernhauer Reiterlein. In our assortment you will find HoDreWa nutcrackers of all three groupings.

From ancient Greece to the Erzgebirge

The nutcracker is older than most people would guess - it is downright ancient. According to Aristotle's records from the 4th century BC, the first nutcrackers with two lever arms were already invented in ancient Greece. The nutcracker took on decorative features around 300 BC; evidence of this was found in a tomb near Taranto. Even multi-talented Leonardo da Vinci is said to have tinkered with a nutcracker device. Evidence shows that figural nutcrackers existed in the 16th century, and were even favored by monarchs such as King Henry VIII of England as gifts to their spouses. The artistically carved figurines had their heyday in the 18th century due to the work of craftsmen from Val Gardena and Oberammergau. After mining in the Ore Mountains came to an end around 1900, in search of a new profession there were also the first craftsmen here who successfully brought nutcracker figures to the market. The most popular figures from the Erzgebirge were gendarmes, soldiers, hussars and kings. The nutcrackers from the Ore Mountains both children's toys and decoration.

Legler nutcracker

From HoDreWa Legler you will find beautifully festive painted kings, splendidly uniformed soldiers and hard-working miners in our Ore Mountain Palace. The HoDreWa wooden figures have an impressive appearance due to the color-coordinated uniforms as well as the accessories matching the vocation of the nutcracker. The soldiers wear a feather on their hats and laced boots, while the miners stride to work equipped with tools and small accents of color on their clothing. Legler's nutcrackers are available in a variety of sizes.

Want proof that your nutcracker really is an "Original HODREWA Nutcracker"? Legler nutcrackers have a sticker on the bottom of the base with the little rider on a rocking horse. With this sign you can be sure that it is an original and qualitative product from Legler.

Little Rider from Hodrewa

The Reiterlein is a very special nutcracker decoration. It is a nutcracker sitting on a rocking horse. The sight resembles an encounter with a Swedish officer from the 30-year war. The little horse is considered to be one of the most beautiful creations of toy manufacture from the Erzgebirge and has also become a popular collector's item all over the world. It was awarded as a winter relief badge to benefactors who helped the needy through donations or collections over the cold winter. The "Sonneberger Reiterlein" from Thuringia was also the symbolic figure of the world toy city until the 1920s.

The company Holz- und Drechslerwaren Dieter Legler GmbH & Co. KG kept this tradition and continued to produce little riders in Rothenthal design. In our assortment you will find HoDreWa horsemen in blue or red uniforms as well as kings in colored robes. The little horses of the riders are well-behaved white horses, whose dark reins are held by soldiers and kings. The lower part of the rocking horse is color-matched to the little rider and decorated in ornate patterns.
