Kunstgewerbe Taulin

The holiday resort of Oberwiesenthal is situated in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) near the Czech border, right at the foot of the Fichtelberg, the highest mountain of saxony (1215m) and famous for the beautiful ski slopes and an impressive view of the surrounding valleys. In this romantic surrounding, the local family business of Taulin has been building innovative Christmas pyramids, Candle arches and Light triangles since 1990. Once founded by Karl-Ludwig Taulin in an annex of his house, the workshop, which since 2016 is run by his daughter Katja Taulin, now has grown to 20 employees, all of them skilled wood craftsmen, who follow the tradition of the Erzgebirge folk art and bring it successfully into the 21th century.

Taulin Pyramids

The Taulin Christmas Pyramids often show a natural motif, densely surrounded with trees made of finely elaborated fretwork. The 1-Tier Taulin Pyramid "Forest People", is build around a finely engraved wood chip tree which rotates around the axis, together with the beautiful figures - just coming back from their working day in the forest. The scenery is settled within the silhouette of a simplified conifer tree. Larger models such as the 1-Tier Taulin Pyramid "Winter Children" even frame the motif with an entire fretwork forest: the little hand-carved sleigh riders and skiers turn in circles between small fir trees. All together the whole shape of this pyramid looks like a magnificent fir tree, consisting of bigger and smaller trees. In some of the splendid pyramids such as the 1-Tier Taulin pyramid with carved deer, fine airbrush tools are used to add striking colourful accents to the idyll of the hand-carved animal figures.

Something even more special are the Two Winged Wheel Pyramids, developed and designed by Taulin. Those pyramids have two fans rotating on the same platform! On the Taulin Two Winged Wheel Pyramid "Deer in the forest", the lush fir trees all around the scenery meet at their tips, creating a beautiful frame for the motif. On the Taulin Two Winged Wheel Pyramid "Nativity Scene", the Star of Bethlehem connects the shape of two stable buildings. Two impellers driven by the warmth of the glowing candles rotate above the scene, and the Christmas story slowly turns on two small platforms on the base.

Taulin Candle Arches and Light Triangles

The patented airbrush technology also creates a special effect on the ">Candle Arches of the Taulin workshop. It is hard to believe that the cheerful and elaborate Taulin Christmas Market with its pyramid in the center is actually sawn out of a single wooden disc.
The perspective design and the skilful colour effects create a perfect illusion of spatial depth in the seven to fifteen-flamed Candle Arches and Light Triangles designed by Taulin. The luminous small fir trees in the foreground of the beautiful scenery on the Taulin Candle Arch "Forester's House with Figures", as well as the use of further indirect lighting hidden inside the Arch enhance the spatial effect of the peaceful winter landscape.

The products of Kunstgewerbe Taulin are made from local wood of the best quality, and have been carefully tested before delivery. Taulin items are certified with the quality seal "Echte Erzgebirgische Handarbeit - das Original" (Real Erzgebirge handcraft - the original).
