Hennig - Traditional folk art

Exklusive insights from the Volkskunst Hennig workshop

The Hennig craftsman's workshop, once founded by Gerhard Kaden as a “wood products factory” in Deutschneudorf, has been producing folk art for almost one century. Initially school articles and small pieces of furniture were produced. In 1952 the company started creating miniature figures of the traditional Erzgebirge (Ore Mountain) folk art. They found their way into the product range through son-in-law Günter Hennig. Due to his passionate interest in the regional history and the arts and crafts of his home region, he also founded a museum for the Ore Mountain traditions in a historical school building in 1997 which is directly near the workshop of “Hennig-Miniaturen”. Günter's son Hartmut Hennig revives the tradition with contemporary impulses and successfully leads it into the future. The special character of Hennig's miniatures is based on a consequently modern, simplified design which was developed by Hartmut Hennig's team in cooperation with the well-known designer Hans Reichelt.

Hennig Nativity figures

The nativity figures by Volkskunst Hennig are available as a set or as single figures. Each figure is uncompromisingly reduced to the most essential design - but without appearing “sterile” in the least. The full, rounded forms radiate a sense of security and a great peace and stillness. Through the restrained colour and form, the holy scene gains a timeless and at the same time solemn character. The various modern nativity sets made by Hennig differ in the number of pieces, colour and size. The Henning nativity figures are available either painted white with details in natural wood- which radiates a special purity - or natural wood with colored glaze in beautiful, warm shades, which fully accentuate the grain of the wood. The 15-piece colorful crib set presents itself with a more traditional design, with more details and painted faces - thus closer to traditional Ore Mountain folk art. The colourful painting gives the set a cheerful, modern flair. Palm trees, stable and many animals complete the holy scenery.

Quality

The simplicity of the nativity figures made by Hennig makes them very special and unmistakable. The characteristic expression of the miniatures is the result of the work of a dedicated design team under the direction of the well-known designer Hans Reichelt, as well as the intensive search for modern design, combined with a high awareness of tradition. “Hennig Kunsthandwerk” is a supporter of the Healthy Forest Group. The wood used comes exclusively from sustainable forestry and is grown and harvested in accordance with FSC or PEFC guidelines.
