Miniaturendrechslerei Uwe Uhlig from Lengefeld

Lengefeld is a former “mountain town” on the Silver Road in the central Erzgebirge, about 22 miles southeast of Chemnitz. The town, surrounded by a green and wooded landscape, is also nicknamed “town between three reservoirs”. A local historical feature is the monumental complex Kalkwerk, with its mighty chimneys and trapezoid-shaped foundations, which are impressive to look at. The farm and workshop of the Miniaturendrechslerei (miniature turnery) Uwe Uhlig are located at the edge of the town, embedded in lush meadows. The main focus of this family business, founded in 1999, lies upon traditional hand turning - and upon creating small and very small objects. It all began with the representation of tiny fairy tale scenes. Over the years, Uwe Uhlig's inventive spirit has opened up other small worlds and created many additional, often astonishing miniature objects - always with a lot of wit, originality, precise manual skill and an almost inexhaustible wealth of ideas.

Uhlig Miniatures - Our assortment

Pocket-Art

Old craftsmanship - new and nobly packed. This could be the motto of the Pocket-Art series. It includes for example the smart “Pocket Christmas trees”. In a simple, only 1.8 inches tall cylinder made of precious woods, a real, handmade, star-decorated chip tree is hidden, which is attached to the lid, that also serves as an attractive base for the ultra-small tree. In the series “Angel to go” a tiny angel, which is also attached to the inside of the lid, is hidden in a cylinder of 2.4 inches height. Small, but extremely fine, down to the last detail: the lid and the casing of the cylinder are made of different woods, for example fine, light cherry wood, combined with red padouk from Africa - a distinctive mixture!

Chicken Stories

The “real” relatives living on Uwe Uhlig's small farm may often have been the inspiration for this series. Uhlig's family of chickens in sizes from 2 to 7 inches includes such different characters as the chic Stella on a shopping tour or the audacious Pepe. Grandma Adele wears a pearl necklace, while the busy Rosemarie digs up the garden. The dashing Rocco, on the other hand, spends his time taking Selfies in a very contemporary way.

Miniature scenes

Many details of Uwe Uhlig's miniature sceneries made of light natural wood can often only be seen with a magnifying glass, and one is always amazed how it is possible to create such tiny motifs by hand. Thus a whole flower meadow finds place on only 1,2 width and 0,7 inches height! Fairy tale motifs such as Cinderella, Rapunzel or Sleeping beauty are illustrated in just as much detail as the tiny walker in the woods or the Holy Family in their nativity scene on 2 × 2.6 inches.

Besides all the astonishing objects already presented, Uwe Uhligs spinning top creations like the spinning top tower, spinning top donuts or mini spinning top boxes made of 3 different precious woods are chic, noble, funny and unique - not only in the Erzgebirge.

Conclusion

Uwe Uhlig's love of craftsmanship and wood is coupled with inventive talent and a special sense for miniature worlds, or things never seen before. In his workshop he uses precious woods, some of which are very expensive, with exotic names as “Ziricote” or “Bocote”. Working with such exotic woods and the interplay of their colours and grains is a novelty in the Erzgebirge. Of course with a lot of respect for their origin. All woods come of course from regular, resource-saving and supervised purchasing. The native precious woods, such as cherry or ash, come from regional sawmills or even from Uhligs own stock.
